A 1920’s penthouse has been transformed to feel like a rambling country home for its English occupant. The building is a classic Rosario Candela prewar structure, its top floor consisting of this penthouse and separate maid’s rooms owned by building residents. Two of these maid’s rooms were integrated into our renovation, allowing a formerly cramped, L-shaped Kitchen to become a vast rectangular space. It features a new east-facing opening, with accordion doors, that merge with a wraparound terrace.
Although the building is in a Landmarks district and therefore subject to exterior restrictions, the façade of this particular apartment is not visible from the street due the terrace setbacks. Therefore, we were able to shift and enlarge openings to fully integrate with the new floor plan. Central air conditioning and water pressure pumps are also seamlessly integrated. The terrace design layers an English sensibility onto the existing Far Eastern plantings. Resilient boxwood, weeping cherry, and styrax complement the existing stewartia, pines, and viburnum. A mix of evergreens form a base that is augmented with seasonal flowering plants. This eclecticism carries over to the interior décor, with its mix of antique and modern pieces.
